22.EDUCATIONAL VISIT
On 22nd March 2025, the Department of Marathi at our college organized a one-day educational field visit to Nashik for a group of students and faculty members. The purpose of this field visit was to provide students with a deeper understanding of Maharashtra’s rich cultural, historical, and literary heritage. The visit covered various sites, each of which holds significant value in the study of Marathi literature, history, and culture. The sites visited included the Pandav Leni Caves, Buddha Vihar & Phalke Smarak, Radio Vishwas Community Radio Station, Udaji Maratha Shaikshanik Varasa Sangrahalay, and Kusumagraj Smarak.
1) Pandav Leni Caves: A Glimpse into Ancient History
The day began with a visit to the Pandav Leni Caves, a significant archaeological site nestled in the Trimbak Hills, near Nashik. These ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves, which date back to the 3rd century BCE, are among the earliest traces of Buddhism in Maharashtra.
The caves are named after the Pandavas from the Mahabharata, although there is no historical evidence linking them to the epic. The caves are a testament to the advanced engineering and artistic skills of ancient Buddhist monks. The intricate carvings, statues, and inscriptions offer a fascinating glimpse into the religious and cultural life of the time.
The students were shown the main caves, which include Chaitya (prayer halls) and Viharas (monastic dwellings), with some particularly fine examples of rock-cut sculptures depicting the Buddha and various Bodhisattvas. The serene ambiance of the caves and the panoramic view of the surrounding hills left a deep impression on all attendees. The historical importance of the caves was highlighted, and students were encouraged to appreciate the architectural finesse and the spiritual significance of the site.
2) Buddha Vihar & Phalke Smarak: The Legacy of Dadasaheb Phalke
The next stop was the Buddha Vihar, located close to the famous Phalke Smarak. The Buddha Vihar is a peaceful and contemplative space that honors the teachings of Buddhism and the legacy of the Buddhist monks who lived in Nashik for centuries. The visit to the Buddha Vihar allowed students to explore Buddhist philosophy and its influence on Indian culture.
Adjacent to the Buddha Vihar is the Phalke Smarak, a memorial dedicated to Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian cinema. Dadasaheb Phalke is known for directing and producing the first full-length feature film in India, Raja Harishchandra (1913). The smarak pays homage to his pioneering contributions to Indian cinema.
The visit offered students a chance to reflect on the connection between the arts and the revolutionary transformations in Indian society. Students learned about Phalke’s vision and the significant role Nashik played in shaping his cinematic journey. The memorial has various statues and plaques commemorating Phalke’s life and work in the realm of cinema.
3) Radio Vishwas Community Radio Station: A Unique Voice for the Community
The next stop on the field visit was the Radio Vishwas Community Radio Station. The station, known for its social activism and community-oriented programming, has been a beacon for local voices, especially in underrepresented areas.
Upon arrival, students were warmly greeted by Miss Ruchita Thakur, a senior staff member at Radio Vishwas, who provided an insightful and informative guide on the workings of a community radio station. She explained how Radio Vishwas serves as a platform for local residents, allowing them to share their stories, concerns, and experiences. The radio station’s focus on empowerment through education, health, and cultural programming was discussed in detail.
Miss Thakur elaborated on the technical aspects of operating a community radio station, including content creation, broadcasting technology, and the importance of engaging the local population in meaningful discussions.
An exciting part of the visit was the live interview conducted by RJ Shraddha, who invited Manohar Maharaj Saykhede, a PG Marathi student, for a conversation. Manohar Maharaj, a well-known figure in the Varakari tradition, shared his experiences with Kirtan performances, which are deeply embedded in the religious and cultural fabric of Maharashtra. His insights into the spiritual significance of Kirtan, as well as his personal journey in the field, were inspiring for both the students and faculty present.
The session allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of how traditional art forms, like Kirtan, are integrated into modern media and continue to thrive in contemporary spaces.
4) Udaji Maratha Shaikshanik Varasa Sangrahalay: Preserving Maratha Heritage
The fourth stop was the Udaji Maratha Shaikshanik Varasa Sangrahalay (Udaji Maratha Educational and Cultural Heritage Museum). This museum is dedicated to preserving the history, culture, and heritage of the Maratha Vidya Prasarak Samaj Sanstha and its contributions to Nashik’s social and educational development.
The museum housed an array of artifacts, including historical documents, books, paintings, and sculptures that portrayed the glory of the Karmaveers, especially focusing on the life and legacy of the Maratha Vidya Prasarak Samaj’s Karmaveers. The collection also included records and items related to the role of education in the Maratha Vidya Prasarak Samaj.
The curator of the museum provided an enriching explanation of each exhibit, highlighting the role of the Maratha Vidya Prasarak Samaj in shaping the socio-political landscape of Nashik. Students were encouraged to reflect on how this rich history continues to influence Marathi culture and society today.
5) Kusumagraj Smarak: A Tribute to Maharashtra’s Literary Icon
The final stop of the field visit was the Kusumagraj Smarak, a monument dedicated to Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar, better known by his pen name Kusumagraj. Kusumagraj was a towering figure in Marathi literature, known for his profound poetry, plays, and essays that captured the essence of human emotions and social issues.
The visit to Kusumagraj Smarak was an emotional and educational journey. The memorial, set amidst lush greenery, offers a tranquil space for reflection. Students had the opportunity to see Kusumagraj’s personal belongings, manuscripts, and various accolades he received throughout his life.
The guide provided students with a deep dive into Kusumagraj’s works, including his famous plays and poetry, which have shaped modern Marathi literature. Kusumagraj’s connection to the socio-political movements in Maharashtra was also discussed, making it clear how his works transcended personal and literary boundaries to engage with wider societal concerns.
The one-day field visit, organized by the Department of Marathi, was a truly enriching experience for all attendees. From the ancient rock-cut caves of Pandav Leni to the modern-day community radio station, each stop was a vivid tapestry of Maharashtra’s rich cultural and intellectual history. The visit not only deepened the students’ understanding of the historical and cultural heritage of the region but also provided them with practical insights into how tradition and modernity coexist in today’s world.
The interaction with Miss Ruchita Thakur at Radio Vishwas and the interview with Manohar Maharaj Saykhede about his involvement in Varakari Kirtan were particularly impactful, providing students with a direct link between their studies and the cultural practices of Maharashtra. Similarly, the visit to the Udaji Maratha Shaikshanik Varasa Sangrahalay and Kusumagraj Smarak helped students connect with the region’s historical legacies, which continue to inspire contemporary Marathi literature and culture.
This field visit would not have been possible without the meticulous planning and coordination of Prof. Dr. V. B. Rathod, Mr. Yogesh Ugale, and Miss Hemalata Chaudhari. Their dedication to providing students with meaningful educational experiences is truly commendable.
The department looks forward to organizing more such field visits to enhance the educational journey of the students, encouraging them to connect with the cultural and literary heritage that shapes their identity as individuals and as part of a larger cultural narrative.
